Piero Casadio, founder and president of Specialty Surface Grinding, began his manufacturing career in Florence - Rifredi, Italy, in 1943 at age fourteen. After working in the same grinding factory in Italy for nineteen years, Piero and his wife, Ione, came to the USA looking for opportunity and a new beginning. They found it in Los Angeles, California, where Piero started work at Blanchard Masters as an operator. Five years later, when Piero left the company to start his own business, Blanchard Masters had grown five-fold in size due, in large part, to Piero’s skill and dedication.

In 1967, Specialty Surface Grinding was founded in Piero’s garage. The new business specialized in grinding complex and precise fastener head configurations for companies like Todeco. Within six months, Specialty Surface Grinding had grown from two machines in a garage to four machines in 1,600 square feet of manufacturing space in Inglewood, California. Along with his intimate knowledge of the grinding process and his years of experience, Piero also had the assistance of two close friends and business associates, Gale Sturdevant and Bruce Chisolm. These two gentlemen were instrumental in helping Piero and Ione get started in America and in business.

As the years passed, Specialty Surface Grinding continued to grow in size and reputation. 1975 saw a move into 3,600 square feet with twelve machines and five employees. In 1990, the company moved into its current location with 5,000 square feet, eighteen machines and twelve employees. Today, after acquiring additional space in 2000, Specialty Surface Grinding has 20 employees, 40 machines and 11,000 square feet of modern manufacturing space. Amazingly, the company has never advertised itself. Customers are acquired by reputation and recommendation only. Years of high-quality, exceptional value and outstanding customer service speak louder than words at Specialty Surface Grinding.

In 1990, after working on and off at the company for ten years, Paul Casadio joined Specialty Surface Grinding with a BA degree from the University of California. Paul worked from the shop floor up, using his talents to enhance production flow and quality to increase value for his customers. Today, Paul serves as general manager and is responsible for all manufacturing operations at Specialty Surface Grinding. Piero Casadio can still be found each day at his desk or on a grinder, overseeing the company, while Ione handles the day-to-day administration of the business that they founded together more than forty years earlier.

The future at Specialty Surface Grinding is being built on the success of its past. “We will continue to take excellent care of our customers while we expand the business and advance into CNC machining services,” explains Paul. “Our number one priority, as always, is 100% quality and outstanding customer service.” Specialty Surface Grinding delivers old-world craftsmanship using state-of-the-art manufacturing technology.
